Large Plants is the project of Jack Sharp, former singer guitarist from psych-folk luminaries Wolf People.
What was initially described in 2020 as a solo “post apocalyptic folk-rock” side project with Large Plants has now flowered into something more significant, The Thorn, Sharp’s second release in the space of just 19 months, following on from debut, The Carrier (April 2022), which emerged as a result of a writing frenzy during lockdown. Although the latest release is folkier and proggier in tone than the biker rock of The Carrier, some of the songs on The Thorn were recorded at the same time – in a friend’s dirty metal barn in Bedfordshire – https://www.folkradio.co.uk/2023/11/large-plants-the-thorn-album-review/
Large Plants debut album ‘The Carrier’ is often described as biker rock, but I feel thats an inaccurate label. Personally I love the 70’s nod of nostalgia to bands like Mountain and Wishbone Ash.
Daniel Robert Elfman, born 1953 is an American film composer, singer and songwriter. He came to prominence as the leader of new wave band Oingo Boingo in the early 1980s. Elfman has frequently worked with directors Tim Burton, Sam Raimi, and Gus Van Sant, contributing music to around 100 movies, including Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish, Darkman, A Simple Plan, Spider-Man 1 and 2, Doctor Strange, Good Will Hunting, Milk, all of the Men in Black and Fifty Shades of Grey franchise films, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and all the themes for Desperate Housewives and The Simpsons. After finishing high school early with plans to travel the world, Elfman followed his brother Richard to France, where he performed violin with an avant-garde musical theater group. He then embarked on a ten-month journey through Africa, busking and collecting a range of West African percussion instruments. After returning to LA from Africa in the early 1970s, Elfman was asked by his brother Richard to serve as musical director of his street theatre performance art troupe The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo. Elfman was tasked with adapting and arranging 1920s and 30s jazz and big band music by artists such as Cab Calloway for the ensemble, which consisted of up to 15 performers playing upwards of 30 instruments. He also helped build instruments unique for the group, including an aluminum gamelan, the ‘Schlitz celeste’ made from tuned beer cans, and a “junkyard orchestra” built from car parts and trash cans. The Mystic Knights performed on the street and in nightclubs throughout LA until Dannys brother, Richard left in 1979. Elfman took over the Mystic Knights as lead singer-songwriter in 1979. He pared the group down to eight players to record and tour as a ska-influenced new wave band under the name Oingo Boingo. Their biggest success among eight studio albums was 1985’s Dead Man’s Party. As a teenager, Elfman dated his classmate Kim Gordon, who would later become one of the members of the rock band Sonic Youth. In 2003, he married actress Bridget Fonda. The things I find most impressive about Danny Elfman are how much his already wide sonic palette continues to grow, and that its still happening at 70 years old, and the incredible shape he seems to be in. From 30’s swing to heavy prog rock, this is Danny Elfman.

Even before ditching the Mystic Knights part of their name, the Mystic Knights of Oingo Boingo began gradually moving away from their theatrical roots towards a new sound based on elements of ska and new wave
Probably the highest quality live recording of Oingo Boingo in 1985.
Here the crazy part. He’s back, and playing live after 30 years away! This show was October 2022, so that ripped dude covered in tattoos is almost 70 years old!
After 30 years away we can see he has re-emerged in finer form than anyone could imagine. Describing 2021’s ‘Big Mess’, a certain punk legend put it this way: “It’s so compositionally overwhelming and assaultive,” said Henry Rollins who recently played selections from Big Mess on his weekly KCRW radio show. “The lyrics are so smart and bristling. It’s like he’s taken all the skills he’s honed over the decades and weaponized them.” This is the vast musical landscape he not so much travels, but creates in his journey through life.
Alexandra Savior McDermott is an American singer-songwriter originally from Portland, Oregon. She first came to public notice at age 17 in 2012 after being publicly lauded by Courtney Love, who saw a video of Savior performing cover songs that were uploaded on YouTube.
Active since 2008, Budapest, Hungarys The Qualitons music falls in between indie rock, psych rock and folk. A lot of their tracks are over 7 minutes long and include multiple sections.
The Electric Peanut Butter Company is the brainchild of musicians Adrian Quesada and Shawn Lee. Adrian Quesada is a Grammy Award winning producer and guitarist. Based in Austin, TX, he is best known as a member and producer of psychedelic soul band Black Pumas. Shawn Lee (b1963) is an American musician. His music is jam oriented, taking the listening through groove inspired cosmic spaghetti westerns or plunging them deep into a swampy mire of psychedelic guitar driven beats. As Shawn Lee’s Ping Pong Orchestra, Lee has released 10 albums on US label Ubiquity Records
Emma Ruth Rundle (b 1983) is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist and visual artist based in Portland, Oregon. Formerly of the Nocturnes, she has released four solo albums and is a member of Red Sparowes and Marriages. Her music is very Pacific Northwest, reminiscent of Chelsea Wolfes gloomy folk rock.
Sleepy Sun is an American psychedelic rock band, formed in 2005 in Santa Cruz, and now based in San Francisco. They have a very throwback sound of wailing blues rock and acid tinged psych folk
Tommy Guerrero may be better known in the world of skateboarding than music. Born in San Francisco, Guerrero joined the skate company Powell Peralta in 1984 and became one of the original members of the legendary “Bones Brigade” team. TG has been playing music since the late 70’s with his brother Tony -both raised on a steady diet of DIY punk music/ethos and skateboarding-which informed and shaped the person he is today. Since then, Guerrero has become an accomplished bassist and guitarist with influences as diverse as John Coltrane, Bad brains, Joy Division and Gabor Szabo. – www.tommyguerrero.com
As fierce of a lioness as they come, UK’s Billy Nomates is a surely a force to be reckoned with, and she has no problem saying NO to the YES men; in fact she thrives on it. Her music has a post punk/wave feel, with an edginess that alludes to the molten fire in her belly. Snarling, almost spoken word verses that lead into catchy chorus’s that you just want to play over and over.. love her.
John Grant has announced news of his fifth solo album, Boy From Michigan, released June 25th 2021 via Bella Union in the UK/Europe and Partisan in the US. To celebrate the occasion Grant has shared an astonishing acid-soaked video to the album’s title track.
Psychedelic shenanigans ensue when The Phantom Band – who let’s face it, are not known for their retiring attitude to performance – don the face paint, tights and some fairly outlandish costumes in a visual accompaniment for their latest single ‘Everybody Knows It’s True’.
Caleb Landry Jones, born 1989, is an American actor and musician, known for his roles as Banshee in X-Men: First Class, Jeremy Armitage in Get Out , Red Welby in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017), and Ty Carter in The Outpost. Music critic Timothy Monger wrote that Jones, on the album, “unleashed what sounds like a lifetime’s worth of ideas and pent-up weirdness, constructing a wild suite of interconnected songs, replete with lurching orchestral sections and harsh fuzzy textures and sung in a variety of different voices and timbres like a character actor gone off the rails.” Monger also declared the album unpredictable and praised the production, while at the same time stating that the album lacks memorable songs. Caroline Edwards of Clash gave the album a positive review, writing that it’s “unlike anything else out in music right now.” Wikipedia
Mary Timony (b1970) is an American independent singer-songwriter, guitarist, keyboardist, and violist. She has been a member of the bands Helium, Autoclave and Wild Flag, and currently fronts Ex Hex. Timony’s music is often heavy and dark, frequently using drones, beats, and modal melodies reminiscent of European Medieval music. She uses a number of alternate guitar tunings, most prominent of which is DADGAE. Her unique style has been cited as an influence amongst well respected and admired musicians such as Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney, Sadie Dupuis of Speedy Ortiz and many more. -Wikipedia
There are two very different sounding segments to this piece. The first is about Peter Ivers and his music, and the second contains vintage footage from his time as host of 80’s new wave/punk show New Wave Theatre. The shows usually started with a cosmically stoned, but brilliant ramble by Ivers about society and utopian visions, followed by some amazing old footage of early 80’s LA punk and new wave bands.
Peter Ivers was an American musician, songwriter and television personality born in 1946. He grew up in Brookline, MA and attended Harvard University in the second half of the ’60s. A research study at the school revealed he had a genius-level IQ, but much to his money minded father’s chagrin Ivers was mostly interested in music, banging around Boston, playing with rock bands and jamming with touring bluesmen, reportedly even earning the admiration of Muddy Waters. He moved to L.A. in 1971, where at first he lived in the Tropicana, a notoriously sleazy West Hollywood rock ‘n’ roll hotel now famous for hosting the likes of Jim Morrison and Tom Waits. He worked on film scores at the American Film Institute, where he befriended the young, aspiring director David Lynch. Lynch was in the early stages of creating Eraserhead, and he asked Ivers to provide music and vocals for the Lady in the Radiator scene. His music is kind of art glam rock, but more experimental. He was the host of the experimental music television show New Wave Theatre, but never achieved mainstream success. Ivers was signed by Van Dyke Parks and Lenny Waronker to a $100,000 contract as a solo artist with Warner Bros. Records in the early 1970s; his albums Terminal Love and Peter Ivers were commercial flops, but would eventually come to be well-regarded by music journalists. On March 3, 1983, Peter Ivers was found bludgeoned to death with a hammer in his Los Angeles loft space apartment. The murderer was never identified. Here are some singles I like. below them is some incredible early LA punk/ new wave footage from New Wave Theatre. Ivers usually opens each episode with a captivatingly brilliant monologue.
The change ups on this track are awesome, as well as some great saxophone playing
Peter Ivers instrument was the harmonica which he plays here
Heres where it gets fun! The following videos are from episodes of the New Wave Theatre shows. They usually start with some sort of glam tinged cosmic, yet brilliant ramble by Ivers about society and utopian visions, followed by some amazing footage of early 80’s LA punk and new wave bands, and then usually some sort of hilarious outro as well by Ivers.
Conceived in 1993, Pickin’ On is a series of rock and country tribute albums performed in a bluegrass style. Incredibly they have released over 100 full length bluegrass tribute albums covering the biggest names in music. There are hundreds of their videos you can find on Youtube but here are a few that I like.

Austin, Texas-based, nine-piece Latin funk purveyors Brownout released Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath, Vol. II in 2016 via Ubiquity Records, a latin, horn tinged version of classic Sabbath songs.
Other Lives, an Oklahoma band fronted by Jesse Tabish, are returning with new album For Their Love. “The album is a record reflecting human feeling in the current state of affairs — economy and politics on the individual, while the latter still has to deal with the basic struggles of finding meaning of their existence,” says Tabish. “Money, love, and death are always real and hard to cope with: what does the individual choose to make these larger themes of life easier to deal with? The record speaks in realness, questions, observing, lamenting and hopefully finding the slightest of hope in themselves, these characters sometimes venturing out into spiritual, religious or institutionalized endeavors. In my personal hope, only finding their self-worth is more important than anything that has been taught or preached to them.”
This is a really cool video with great animation. best enjoyed on full screen!
Formed in the early 80’s, the UK’s Maximum Joy are a dubbed out, horn forward group that mix punk, funk, disco, and reggae, all contained by tight, ropey bass lines. Produced by the legendary Adrian Sherwood. His hand is evident in the sound, that is both loose and technically on point.
Reignwolf is a Seattle based rock and roll band led by Saskatoon, Saskatchewans Jordan Cook. Known for their raw sound and high energy performances, their powerful live show soon earned them a devoted following with appearances at major music festivals and dates opening for some of the most influential bands including Black Sabbath and Pixies. Often Cook performs solo playing guitar and singing while keeping the beat with a kick drum.
Chelou is a man of many faces. In the studio, he likes to give his tracks a dream-like sheen emphasized by his vocals and electro-acoustic textures. Incidentally, house producer Maya Jane Coles spotted and enlisted him for her recent track “Darkside”, and they’ve become friends ever since. Up on stage with his subtly powerful drummer in tow, Chelou shows his love of the contrast between the calm and the storm, between moments of tenderness and fits of rage. He adds a bit of life to his repertoire – something a little more electric and stormy – by harking back to his teenage love of all things grunge. – www.europavox.com
Siena Root is a Swedish rock band with its roots in late '60s and '70s rock music. Wishbone Ash, Deep Purple, Mountain and even Black Sabbath come to mind when listening to their music. The group was founded in Stockholm in the late'90s, and their sound is based on heavy organ, howling guitars, bass riffing and big drums. It is also often enriched with bluesy female vocals, various guest musicians and psychedelic desert rock vibes. 2009's Different Realities, arguably their best album, is a great fusion of psychedelic rock and Indian folk music.
Here Lies Man are a quintet originating from Los Angeles. Founded by members of Antibalas in the Spring of 2016, Here Lies Man mixes heavy fuzz rock with afrobeat and art rock to compose a sound all their own, taking the musical world by storm with their eponymous 2017 debut. The band gained quick attention for their “What if Black Sabbath played afrobeat?” thesis and was praised by many critics for an innovative musical style. – Article: fandom.com Photo: The Georgia Straight

Born 1966 in Sweden, Anders Osborne is an American singer/songwriter who tours solo or with his band, as well as playing in North Mississippi Osborne (N.M.O), a group formed by Osborne and North Mississippi Allstars. As a teen, Osborne started playing guitar and listening to Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Jackson Browne, and Joni Mitchell records. He was influenced by the vocal styles of Ray Charles, Van Morrison and Lowell George, Robert Johnson and recordings of African drumming. "Blues connected everything together for me," Osborne recalls. "The early rock, the R&B, the jazz, the singer-songwriters. Blues was like a thread running through everything." He began playing in Open D tuning, which gives his fretwork a signature sound and feel. "I first heard Open D on Joni Mitchell's Blue" he says, "and my fingers just fit the tuning." Wikipedia
Yeah, the colours of the morning, look so pretty without the cocaine, shimmering like a diamond mine. But there's something about ol' Shane, wants you to be in pain, it wants it all the time. I don't need your understanding, the pity or another meeting, I just want you to look away for just one day....ah fuck it, so sick of this liquor drought. Mind of a Junkie - Some real Neil Young vibes on this one.
Yeah Im nervous Im sweating I hate to make amends, bunch of opinions but I'm always on the fence. Pissed off and sad at the same time please somebody save me from my crazy mind. I try to read the big book but I can't see the words every time I meditate the whole things a blur, panic attacks and short of breath I try to get things done when my body needs to rest. I've been living in the mind of a junkie thinking my junkie thoughts putting out my selfish aspirations, oh not letting God into my heart. I don't pick up the phone and I cant sleep I ain't got no appetite but I still over eat I want peace and quiet but I keep running my mouth my soul is like a hurricane but I am still filled with self doubt. I hate the way I look and my ego's always bruised I isolate myself I get some more tattoos. Im always running late so I can't make any plans Im preaching about stuff that I dont understand. I've been living in the mind of a junkie thinking my junkie thoughts Im putting out my selfish aspirations, oh not letting God into my heart.

The Malah have been captivating ears across the country with their organic, electro grooves since 2003. Having recently relocated to the burgeoning music scene in Colorado, by way of Greenville, SC, The Malah have spent the last decade touring relentlessly, mastering their sound, and gaining a devout fan-base along the way. In a scene where live-electronic music is running rampant, the Malah have managed to stand out by mixing rich, earthy atmospheres with electrifying rhythms. The trio explores the meeting point of cutting-edge technology and ancient musical theory, creating a unique sound that is praised in both the “Jam” and “Electronica” communities. The music is constantly evolving and brings together influences from an endless array of genres including Rock, Funk, Hip Hop, Jazz, World Beat, and Breakbeat with an effortless transition.

Son Littles music touches on soul, blues, hip-hop and reggae. Samples, fuzzy guitar and simple drums work together to create an undeniable groove and NME called his sound “pure, heart-spilled-over-the-road soul.” Born in Los Angeles to a preacher and a teacher, as a kid Son (formerly known as Aaron Livingston) absorbed songs from dusty family records and learned saxophone and piano, though he felt more at home inventing his own language on those instruments rather than following the lesson plan. Adapt or die, as they say. Cycling through jazz, rock and R&B history, the hungry young son was beginning his true education. He moved east, then to Philly. He loves to write, he lives to write – and even though there have been lapses of time, he always comes back to it as both a vocation and a joy. There are many channels to Son Little’s broadcast, varied stops on the dial, from blues to soul to funk to folk, and juke-joint jazz and chamber pop and back again. His voice—raw, weary yet alert, grave and gravelly, Marvin and Otis and Stevie all at once—soars and creeps, cracks and moans. His songs haunt, thrill, yearn and stomp like all the best work of his heroes. He has collaborated with highly respected artists like The Roots and the producer/DJ RJD2. And more recently, he had the distinct honour of producing legendary gospel singer Mavis Staples’ 4-song EP, Your Good Fortune, in addition to writing two of the songs on the recording. The collaboration inventively merges Staples’ iconic and soulful voice, renowned as part of The Staple Singers and as a Grammy-winning solo artist, with Little’s talent for reconfiguring the sensibilities of genres including soul, hip-hop and heavy rock. The resulting tracks retain every bit of Staples’ emotional delivery, while adding an array of modernist sounds created with the cut and paste methodology of contemporary hip-hop. VFF
Editorial Review from Amazon – The progressive music scenes in 1970s Indonesia were largely underground as a result of strict censorship imposed by the dictator Suharto. Those who performed music marked by relentless fuzz, over the top, politically charged lyrics, strong rhythms and a cranky low-fidelity were truly rebellious. And the resulting output has been largely outside of the confines of this island nation unheard or ignored. Indonesia, based in large part on the restrictions imposed by Suharto, is better known for the coffee it exports than the music it creates. This situation hasn’t been remedied by the rough-hewn Indonesian bootlegs that dotted the psychedelic landscape over the past five years. Thanks now to the tireless and expensive research of Canadian hip hop producer and Southeast Asian music specialist Jason Moss Connoy – and the trust that Indonesian rock legend Benny Soebardja placed in Now-Again Records as he traversed his homeland’s islands securing the rights necessary for us to offer you this anthology – we feel like we can, in good spirits and conscience, shine the light on some of the most impressive organizations to offer their take on the psychedelic and progressive rock and funk sounds during the early shocking, shaking days of Suharto’s regime.
Its all great but here are 7 of my favourite tracks off the album
Nobody knows for sure who the elusive, desert dwelling Clutchy Hopkins really is. A multi instrumentalist from California, his music brings to mind DJ Shadow and Shawn Lee, both of whom could be the man behind Clutchy. This is music that wanders through you, just press play and step away, its a journey.
Clutchy Hopkins and Fat Einstein – High Desert Low TideHigh desert crunch meets city life punch for this collaborative project in sound. Instrumental elements of Soul, Jazz, Hip Hop, Rock and more resonate throughout the record. Acoustic and electric instrumentation set the tone, and in their individual styles Clutchy & Fatty navigate your journey through psych-folk caverns of cactus dust to bloodshot rust-covered marine layer funk. It’s completely distinctive, original, and fresh, paying homage to the past, present and future. Visionary Folk-Funk. – Mike Jones, M.I.M.S.
There’s a spare, spacious approach on Walking Backwards that almost reminds us of the energy that we first felt in DJ Shadow’s groundbreaking work of a decade before — a similar love of gritty, organic source material — and an ear for putting it together with lots of dark twists and turns that balance nicely between classic funk and current hip hop production sensibilities. The flavor of each tune changes nicely — making the album way more than just a clichéd collection of beats…” – Dustygroove
The music on The Life of Clutchy Hopkins is a marvelously concocted and amazingly fresh & contemporary mesh of funk, hip-hop, jazz, and straight-out weird orchestral psychedelia (Hopkins played all the instruments himself, which include drums, bass, guitar, organ, flute, melodica, and assorted percussion) – Bandcamp
2009’s Fascinating Fingers by Shawn Lee & Clutchy Hopkins
Clutch of the Tiger sounds like a collection of film-noir tracks run through the Clutchy Hopkins and Shawn Lee magical music machine. It’s dusty and mysterious junkyard jazz that’s powered by sly beats and other-worldly funk. Famous comic book creator Jim Mahood (who has worked on Spiderman/Marvel, Clerks, Grrl Scouts, Stupid Comics, etc etc) liked the tunes so much he provided the killer artwork for the package! – Ubiquity Records
Music is my Medicine – Late in ’08, Ubiquity was approached by the mysterious Misled Children about another project from Clutchy Hopkins, the man they claim to represent. A vintage Caribbean tracksuit jacket was found in the office fridge, and written in permanent marker on the inside right arm was their request for a meeting where we would “get another piece of the Clutchy Hopkins puzzle.” Cutting a long story short, we acquired a bag of 2-inch reels that contained the dusty, dubbed out Clutchy Hopkins tracks on this LP. Take a pinch of Hopkins deep musical madness and add a sunshine-blessed dubbed-out twist, and that is “Music Is My Medicine”. Ubiquity
Skinshape is the project of British musician, William Dorey. The sound has roots in many genres, from 1960s-70s Funk, Soul, Reggae and Psychedelic Rock to Afrobeat and Folk. Out of a love for old music and the way it sounded, Dorey initially experimented with samples (especially drum breaks) to create instrumental hip-hop/trip-hop tracks, but then later started to play around with tape machines as a means to create his own ‘samples’. This process gave birth to Skinshape, with all elements being recorded by Dorey since the first self-titled album, released in 2014. He released his second album “Oracolo” in 2015, and in 2017 he released his third album “Life & Love”. Aside from the Skinshape project, Dorey was bassist for the band Palace from 2014-2017, and also runs a reggae label called Horus Records, based in North London. – Spotify
Vancouver’s Christopher Smith is the musical force known as Dralms. It’s hard figure out what style of music it is, a lot of his tracks are bass driven and and experimental at times, while other songs are more subdued and introspective. The Peaking Lights reggae remix of Shook is better than the original in my opinion.
Atlanter – A Norwegian supergroup of sorts, featuring soloists Jens Carelius and Arild Hammerø plus a couple of seasoned sessioneers, Atlanter play baroque psych-rock somewhere in the Venn diagram between Grizzly Bear and Traffic. – NME
Atlanter is Jens Carelius’ and Arild Hammerø’s new band project. They play rock inspired by desert blues bands, by German krautrock and by old delta blues. All this is done with a Norwegian twist and point of view, and is perhaps best described as Norwegian viddeblues. – Soundcloud

Walter Rossi’s name may not be familiar to many people in the USA but if you grew up in Canada in the mid 70’s he was hard to miss as his music was all over FM radio. Between the years of 1976-1980 he released 3 excellent studio albums which not only showcased his guitar mastery but also proved that he was no slouch in the songwriting department either. Prior to embarking on a solo career he played alongside the legendary Wilson Pickett and was also a member for a brief time of drummer Buddy Miles’ Express before Buddy went on to play with Jimi Hendrix in Band of Gypsys. Walter is an undiscovered gem and exactly why he was never able to achieve success in the US is mind boggling, although lack of money and poor management certainly played a large part in him not achieving recognition south of the border. I would strongly advise you to seek out those 3 early records, his self titled debut album, Six Strings Nine Lives & Diamonds for the Kid, trust me you will not be disappointed. Since the early 80’s he has spent most of his time producing other acts but in early 2004 he had the itch to play live again after being away from the stage for many years, he also found time to release a new CD called Secret Sins. by Ryan Sparks – January 2005

The 2nd release on Dischi Autunno is the 1st album of The Magic Ray, new project of established artist Fred Bigo aka Electronicat. The album is produced by Cosmo Vitelli.
Fred Bigo: “Work on The Magic Ray began in 2015 when, after playing him recordings of a set of spontaneous compositions, Cosmo Vitelli offered to produce the album in his new studio in Marzahn, located in the somewhat desolate far east of Berlin, Germany. We worked on new arrangements of selected songs, and re-recorded guitars, bass, and electronics. Live drums were laid down by skilled percussionist Chris Imler. Vocals and lyrics were provided by the Scottish singer Catriona Shaw, as well as by the legendary Kid Congo Powers – Soundcloud
“To anyone who has heard the music of Kikagaku Moyo, it should come as no surprise that the band’s origins lie in hours upon hours of late-night jamming, illuminated by nothing more than the geometric patterns playing behind the band’s eyelids, resulting in a natural, free-floating sound, as of-the-earth as it is intergalactic. It may be surprising that the band sharpened their improvisational skills by busking on the streets of their native Tokyo. It may be surprising that the band’s overall sound may owe as much or more to the Incredible String Band as it does to Acid Mother’s Temple. Boundless though they may be, Kikagaku Moyo are anything but lost, their child-like wonder manifested in a confident, courageous exploration of sound. Labels – psychedelic, folk, prog-rock, psychedelic-folk-mixed-with-prog-rock – do little to accurately reflect the spectrum of influences on display, let alone the more impactful realization of completeness in Kikagaku Moyo’s songs. Easily one of the most shimmering crown-jewels in the rapidly expanding BBiB catalog, look for Kikagaku Moyo and Forest of Lost Children to be found taking shape in the expanded minds of listeners everywhere.” – Ryan Muldoon
Jonathan Wilson (b 1974) is an American musician and record producer. He runs Fivestar Studios, in Echo Park, Los Angeles, which he relocated from its original location in Laurel Canyon in 2009. The space is renowned for its sound quality and analog recording equipment. Though less folky overall, his sound is reminiscent of CSNY and other folk rock groups of the 70’s, so it’s no surprise that 2013’s Fanfare features David Crosby and Graham Nash.

Zammuto, led by ex Books Nick Zammuto are classified as indie rock, but with their long meandering instrumentals and quirky melodies they clearly spend a lot of time under the jam band tent.

Way back in the 10-cent bin, between the 40-odd copies of Whipped Cream & Other Delights and those “Sounds of Hawaii” records made exclusively by people who’d never set foot on Hawaii, Monster Rally’s Ted Feighan has found paradise. “Exotica,” we used to call it: “Space-age bachelor pad music,” that sort of thing. Feighan, having lifted dozens of samples from the original, often-warped wax, realigns them into a sparkling, sun-soaked collage, deftly sliding between opulent slack-key guitars, clattering breakbeats, and shimmering tropicalia, like the Avalanches stuck in Honolulu with visa issues, or the Caretaker on daquiri three. Mystery Cove, the fourth Monster Rally full-length, is pure, distilled escapism: 42 straight minutes of somewhere else, no SPF required.-by Pitchfork
Via SoundCloud– Fred Thomas will never create his masterpiece, and it’s better that way. An indie-rock lifer with too many aliases to count, he has been creating imperfect, emotional music so consistently that any record that felt like a capstone on a particular phase of his career would ruin his whole appeal. This is messy music that bleeds from releases to release. Epiphanies shift and deepen with each record, aging in time with Thomas.

From the “Watch Out” (1970’s) LP. Zimbabwe Psychedelic Rock.
n an explosion of rock music that spanned from Nigeria to Zambia during the late 1970s, the revolutionary Zimbabwean rock movement, although rarely recognized and widely obscured, played a distinct role in its nation’s musical history.
This is the first time that Watch Out! will be released outside of Zimbabwe. In the liner notes, project curator and researcher Matthew Shechmeister writes, “The people who made this record, and the world it came out of, make for the most compelling and heart wrenching story we’ve ever heard behind an album we’ve featured.”
A culmination of afrobeat, heavy jams and psychedelic sounds, Zimbabwean rock uncovers the underground sound that has come to make up the distinctively African genre. As a part of the counterculture movement that took root in the country during the late 1970s, Wells Fargo rose to fame as Zimbabwe entered the last decade of its war for independence. In the face of a systemically racist and oppressive Rhodesian government, rock became an outlet for expression- Youtube

Hanni El Khatib, a first-generation American, is the son of a Palestinian father and a Filipino mother. His second album, Head in the Dirt, released after two years of excessive touring, was recorded by Dan Auerbach of Black Keys who’s provided a more polished and sophisticated sound, letting the music retain the same eclectic quality. Angry NWOBHM guitars. Arrogant leads. A singer that’s more punk than metal. Earworm riffs. Lyrics out of the notebook of a schizophrenic religious zealot. Relentless drum barrage. 29 minutes of steel fists pulverizing your face. A vinyl collecting, tape trading, guitar shredding heavy metal kid can grow up, learn to do other things and leave the fast guitar riffs and apocalyptic metal visions of his teenage years behind. But the fast guitar riffs and apocalyptic metal visions can NEVER really leave the kid.
This is the story of Rotör’s riffmeister JVH, who found himself recording a pile of early 80’s NWOBHM inspired music in the early 2010’s. He just couldn’t help himself, once that floodgate of nasty heavy metal was re-opened, the riffs just came pouring out. The old beast woken up from years of slumber, thirsty for blood. JVH recruited four other three-letter-names to work on the songs and Rotör became it’s own kind of a metal monster, proudly standing on it’s 10 steel legs.
Rotör may include bits of Speedtrap, Hard Action, Vino Siitin, Tremor, Arkhamin Kirjasto, Seremonia or Steel Mammoth.
Lost post-punk classic from 1980. A unique mixture of noisy riffs, angular pop melodies and dubwise production aesthetic. Second ever album release on On-U Sound, never issued before on CD or Digital. Features former members of Durutti Column and future members of Simply Red! -Soundcloud
Fort Atlantic is analog warmth and digital madness, quiet songs of searching and anthemic songs of discovery. “We balance between heartbeats and hard drives,” says Jon Black, singer and writer for Fort Atlantic. Whether it’s the one-take troubadour folk song of suburban escape “New York Lights” or the nine-minute Bladerunner meets Gibson Guitars movement of “I’m Wrong”, Fort Atlantic’s debut truly stretches the divide of the current musical landscape. The live show is a tug-of-war between humanity and technology mirroring the existence of our city streets and signal searching while never losing sight that each song tells our story in this binary terrarium. Crystal Syphon, one of the greatest “lost” groups of the West Coast psych scene, came together in Merced, California in 1965. Originally a Beatles / Byrds-influenced unit called the Morlochs, they soon shed their original moniker and moved in a more psychedelic direction, becoming a fixture on the ballroom circuit from 1966-1970. Although their music may nod in the direction of the New Tweedy Brothers and Quicksilver Messenger Service at times, it’s imbued throughout with a distinctive sound that arose from practicing up to six nights a week. The band entertained offers from various labels during their existence, but as they insisted on complete artistic control and ownership of their music, no deals were struck. Now, some 44 years after its creation, Roaratorio is making the music of Crystal Syphon available for the first time ever. Drawn from studio tracks, rehearsal tapes and a live recording from the Fillmore West, Family Evil is released in an edition of only 500 copies!
As one half of the hip hop duo Rizzle Kicks, Jordan Stephens has enjoyed enjoyed critical and commercial success.
