Frameworks

FrameworksRich, warm compositions bursting with blossoming strings, pulsing bass, and haunting vocals fill the catalog of Frameworks, Manchester-based performer and producer Matthew James Brewer. Adding his sophomore LP, KINGS, to his previous two EP’s for Loci Records last year, Brewer has built an arsenal of deeply personal songs that move the body and mind. KINGS featured Ninja Tune’s Jono McCleery, who joins fellow UK standout JP Cooper among the high-profile vocalists who have contributed to the Frameworks project across downtempo, organic house, and subtle hip-hop. His debut album, Tides, released in 2015 by First Word Records first thrust the producer into the international spotlight, granting him a following in the United States. Frameworks has made a splash on the North American festival circuit, performing at Coachella, Electric Forest, Lightning in a Bottle, Camp Bisco, Global Eclipse Gathering, and the 20th anniversary of Shambhala. He’s also toured in Europe alongside Loci Records founder Emancipator. This year, Brewer has been touring the Frameworks live lineup with drummer Cory Eberhard, violinist Jessica Borth, guitarist Gareth Metcalf and bassist Keith Thomas. Taking the Frameworks catalog to new and evocative heights, the live band brings a depth and focus that demands to be experienced. – https://linktr.ee/frameworks_uk

“Providing the world with music that takes the listener to places beyond their audio system. Creator of deep, electronic and slow house. Head honcho at Dansen onder de Sterren parties. Graphic designer. Dad. Husband. Thomas was caught by the enchantment of music since the very beginning. Working as a graphic designer for 16 years, it felt natural to step into the world of sound design. Although not married to a specific genre, his style touches elements of deep, melodic and tribal. He produces different sounds for different occasions, mostly by himself, sometimes joining forces with other musicians.
And with success: his first solo EP, titled Athinouk, was released on Tropical Twista Records in May 2016. More releases appeared on Amsterdam based Phat Elephant Recordings, Sol Selectas, Cosmic Awakenings and many other respected labels.” Resident Advisor

Audiophysical is Andre Lamb, New Zealand born Vancouver, BC based multi instrumentalist, producer and visual artist. Lambs deep sound  fuses genres like Blues, Reggae, Jazz, Funk and Folk into grooves that roll along like fog through the streets.  He plays all the instruments, but his trumpet playing is what stands out for me. A couple tracks have definite whispers of Miles Davis.

These days he is running his new live act by the name of “Alek Lee & The Leaders”, with himself on the vocals and congas, singing his new original songs in hebrew, backed up by a full band including drums, bass, electric guitar and samples from the studio productions. no computer.

Adouk Boucan

Adouk Boucan is a twenty-years-old composer and producer from Bordeaux. In a cold and broken groove, “Blanche” tells a terrible love story: that of the daughter of the Moon, came down on earth out of boredom and in order to discover imaginary metropoles inhabited by disturbing characters. One of them is to become her lover. Anachronistic and contradictory, the world she enters mixes double-basses and machines, yesteryear swing and nocturnal, trip hop sounds – edited from Amazon Editorial Reviews

“Back To Nature,” which features Kuauhtli Vasquez and Wixárika Tribe, is the first track from Nightmares On Wax’s 2018 album, Shape The Futurewww.behance.net. From the message, to the video collage to the music itself this music video is one of my favourites. Its so amazing viewed on fullscreen, (bottom right corner) but you wont be able to see the lyrics. Image: www.behance.net

All humans… share one spirit. All humans share one consciousness. But yet they wanna be separated “like my life, “my ideas”. They don’t realize that all humans share a huge pool of consciousness, of thought. All human thought vibrates at a certain frequency. Were all in communication. You know, when you exhale I breathe air, you breathe..were all together really. This is the way nature designed it. So that we will be sharing the earth, together. Theres a time, when you’re understanding mother earth, how nature is functioning. Nature and the earth, understand this relationship. Like, the earth itself is a huge magnet. So its creating energy, a magnetic force. The earth is giving it to us in a perfect and natural way. Everything in the material world comes from the spirit. The reason nature is alive is because theres a spirit thats being manifested constantly. So we said that everything comes from the spirit, from the energetic life source. And humans they just wanna take. They go, they gather, they take. They’re taking, just taking, taking, taking. Or they can say you have to give first…To the spirit. Everything from there you will receive…Take a couple breaths of air.  This is the same air that my family is breathing. This is the same air that they’re breathing in every part of the planet. Lets take care of this. We’re all eating the food that mother earth gives us everywhere, everybody’s food comes from the same earth. So lets create that global consciousness This planetary way of living.

Rorschack

If there were anyone to label as an eclectic artist, it would be Noam Aharon, alter ego Rorschack. While the rest of us were playing video games and avoiding cooties, Aharon invested his time and energy into his love for music by the age of 12. From start to finish, Rorschack’s music successfully takes listeners on a trip across the world, creating a diverse experience as you jump from one song to the next. Aharon’s unique music can be credited to the jet setter lifestyle he has lived. Born and raised in Israel, Noam moved to Europe as a young adult to experience some of the world’s best cultural habits and the music scenes in Berlin, Spain and Italy. While spending four years in Kolkata, India, Rorschack dabbled in indo jazz world fusion, adding to his already expansive musical spread. 2008 brought Rorschack to where he is now – a member of the electronic music scene in California. There’s no doubt that he prides himself on having a unique sound combining everything from Middle Eastern to Indian and Persian music, as well as funk rock, jazzy beats, hip-hop groove and more. – Soundcloud

Marenn Sukie

Chris Roth, AKA Marenn Sukie is an accomplished sample manipulator whose richly organic sounds call to mind ‘Rounds’ era Four Tet and the sophisticated jazz of Cinematic Orchestra. Mining audio gold from the widescreen productions of classic 70’s music Roth balances an interest in contemporary beat culture with a winsome eye for the golden sounds of the past. “My tracks have usually around 30 different samples in one tune,” Roth explains “I make a point to never sample ‘loops’ – it’s a mix of pitching samples then maybe adding a synth for bass lines.” The Mosaic EP spans a wide range of moods and tempos – genre is fluid in the world of Marenn Sukie; house, drum n bass and jazz bleeding together, creating a beguiling blend all Roth’s own. Released May 11, 2018 – from Bandcamp

Clutchy Hopkins

There’s a spare, spacious approach on Walking Backwards that almost reminds us of the energy that we first felt in DJ Shadow’s groundbreaking work of a decade before — a similar love of gritty, organic source material — and an ear for putting it together with lots of dark twists and turns that balance nicely between classic funk and current hip hop production sensibilities. The flavor of each tune changes nicely — making the album way more than just a clichéd collection of beats…” – Dustygroove

The music on The Life of Clutchy Hopkins is a marvelously concocted and amazingly fresh & contemporary mesh of funk, hip-hop, jazz, and straight-out weird orchestral psychedelia (Hopkins played all the instruments himself, which include drums, bass, guitar, organ, flute, melodica, and assorted percussion) – Bandcamp

2009’s Fascinating Fingers by Shawn Lee & Clutchy Hopkins

Clutch of the Tiger sounds like a collection of film-noir tracks run through the Clutchy Hopkins and Shawn Lee magical music machine. It’s dusty and mysterious junkyard jazz that’s powered by sly beats and other-worldly funk. Famous comic book creator Jim Mahood (who has worked on Spiderman/Marvel, Clerks, Grrl Scouts, Stupid Comics, etc etc) liked the tunes so much he provided the killer artwork for the package! – Ubiquity Records

Music is my Medicine –  Late in ’08, Ubiquity was approached by the mysterious Misled Children about another project from Clutchy Hopkins, the man they claim to represent. A vintage Caribbean tracksuit jacket was found in the office fridge, and written in permanent marker on the inside right arm was their request for a meeting where we would “get another piece of the Clutchy Hopkins puzzle.” Cutting a long story short, we acquired a bag of 2-inch reels that contained the dusty, dubbed out Clutchy Hopkins tracks on this LP. Take a pinch of Hopkins deep musical madness and add a sunshine-blessed dubbed-out twist, and that is “Music Is My Medicine”. Ubiquity

Binkbeats

Master percussionist and multi instrumentalist Frank Wienk, aka Binkbeats creates a rich tapestry of sound using looping and a vast collection of instruments – from vibraphone to the guzheng (Chinese harp) and even typewriters. Beats Unraveled marked an exploratory phase of how to recreate certain sounds with his own instruments and gear. Now composing his original material, Wienk has began stretching his sonic purview beyond just his vast array of percussion, completely disregarding any parameters. Binkbeats influences bleed into each other freely, intuitively and fearlessly. Cavernous, four-to-the-floor club sprawlers, widescreen pop euphoria and brooding drone workouts all orbit Binkbeats’ all-embracing vision. The common thread of it all: to spawn something surreal out of the earthly. On stage, Wienk naturally surrounds himself with a dazzling amount of toys, instruments and gear: a physical performance that ranges from daredevil to introspective, exploring a nexus of possibilities. – Resident Advisor

Ophir Kutiel, professionally known as Kutiman, is an Israeli musician, composer, producer and animator. He is best known for creating the online music video project, ThruYOU, where he creates songs by editing together random amateur video clips. The more you watch, the more you appreciate how much skill this takes to do.

His own work has a decidedly more psych rock feel to it. This is my favourite track from 6am

Tensei returns with another installment of the HotBox Sessions. These instrumentals were originally created in 2009-2010 and used by Chicago mc’s for mixtapes and various projects. The HotBox was our old studio in Chicago in a tiny extra room that had no central air. It used to get very hot and literally we would be sweating while making music in the summer. These songs were created prior to incorporating jazz and soul musicians to our sound. Tribute, the final track is a bonus cut inspired by the late great dilla. The vocal versions to these songs are below

MLiR is a Swedish musical collective fronted by Marco Gegenheimer and Einar Alterfix Christoffersson. Utilizing hundreds of samples and mostly old analog equipment, their releases are a dizzying foray through 60’s psychedelia, fuzzed out 70’s gangster funk, beats and disco house. Since these mixes are so long, and full of so many change ups, its best just to let it play in the background while you’re around the house.

When Panagiotis Melidis, the Greek producer who records as Larry Gus, first began releasing music, his primary mode of expression was parroting other artists to create sample-heavy pastiche. His productions encompass everything from Afrobeat to hip-hop; after signing to DFA, his first two albums were attempts to turn bits and pieces from prototypical psych pop outfits like El Guincho and Animal Collective into a whole. His 2015 album, Years Not Living, was a more conceptually confident stew of African-influenced grooves, slathered-on samples, and his own heavily layered vocals. His latest album was June 2016’s ‘At Your Desk’. This seven-track collection features two original tracks, a cover of Bjork’s “I Miss You”, and four epic remixes from some of the album’s standout tracks by 40 Thieves, Musik Non Stop, Luke Vibert, and Daniel.T. & Cooper Saver-Pitchfork

Laband had, as he puts it, “a big fall from grace” where he could barely take care of himself, let alone write music. Before all that, though, Laband was one of South Africa’s bright young things, a gifted and troubled musician that got his start in a thrash punk band as a guitarist and screamer.
Soon, though, Laband fell in love with electronic music generally and Kid Loco specifically. Acid trips with A Grand Love Story led to his own sample-laden soundscapes that made him a star in his home country and, eventually, a deal with Compost Records in Europe to release his third album, Dark Days Exit in 2005. Laband has an uncommon touch with mellow sounds—a way of creating downtempo that never treads near cliché.
Things went quiet release-wise after Dark Days, but recently Laband has re-emerged with a new DJ name (Snakehips) and the promise of a new album with Compost. He also has plenty of opinions about music and his beloved—and fragile—homeland. Indeed, as RA’s Richard Marshall found out earlier this year, even as he makes noise about leaving South Africa, Laband can’t help but speak to how much he still has to learn from it.

Sam Fergusson known to many as Frenic is a fast emerging UK talent garnering an international reputation for producing music which shows his inspiration from many forms of dance and hip hop whilst hinting at deeper musical influence. Frenic first started making beats for hip hop MC’s after becoming inspired by listening to rap heavyweights Wu-Tang Clan, DJ Premier, and Pete Rock. Having bought a pair of turntables began his quest into understanding scratching and turntableism which then lead him to forming a live act called Lost Project. Popular on the U.K hip hop scene, they played many lives sets to great response, even supporting hip hop royalty like The Pharcyde, The Beatnuts, Task Force and Afrika Bambaataa.
