Fresh from the mind of Renegades Of Jazz, Dem Juju Poets serve a bewitching brew: sharp with staccato Latin elements but rich, hazy and mystical with African and Cuban elements, it’s an alluring fusion across both sides; “Voodoo Jazz” lives up to its name with lolloping double bass bassline, warm horns and insistent rhythmic vocal. “Watusi Fever” sidesteps to the left with a more complex time signature, layers of subtle percussive texture and flutes that pepper with funk. Get on this. Juno Records

Joe Claussell is a pioneer, blending African and Brazilian rhythms with Disco and House since the early 1990’s. Inspiring the music world with his labels Spiritual Life Music and Ibadan records and with his legendary Body & Soul parties that he ran for 6 years with Francois K and Danny Krivit in NYC.  For Toy Tonics he remixed an obscure afro funk song by German Afro – Kraut Band Karl Hector & The Malcouns and Nicolas Tounga, singer from Burkina Faso. The original song was released on a limited 7“ on Now Again records/ L.A. in 2008. Sold out for a long time. Claussell’s remix is an amazing 11 minutes afro-tech jam. A great journey though styles.

The next track is Night Masquerade by Vito & Druzzi. Again: NYC guys. You might know the boys also for being part of The Rapture/ DFA. Since a few years they produce electronic music under the name of Vito & Druzzi. Part of New York’s Throne of Blood crew. Some might remember their vocal contribution for Joakim’s Bring Your Love. On their track for Toy Tonics they go tribal. Somewhere between Steve Reich inspired Gamelan pattern, smooth flowing over a 4/4 beat top by a nasty, 1970’s Funk synth solo that turns the whole track into a new direction.

Third track is by Kapote, man behind Toy Tonics and owner of many great records with hot samples. His Besamo Fly is a 110 Bpm slow house jam – makes you think about Mexican beaches or Paris Filter House nights of the 1990’s. – Soundcloud Review

Ancient Egyptian Music - Desert Mercenaries - YouTube

Whether its a Turkish artist playing Anatolian psych rock or a pasty Welshman hammering away on an Oud over sampled beats, the songs on this playlist in one way or another represent the sounds of the region. Like a lot of Headstash playlists, much of the music on here contains traditional instruments played over modern beat making and programming. I love the organic sound of live instruments, but also the energy and creativity of electronic production so Im always looking for interesting new music that combines the two.

Cosmic Cowboys

It is in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Venice, that Nico and Kaled decide to create a new project called “Cosmic Cowboys” with the purpose melting their different musical backgrounds into a new sound that soon has become their very own trademark worldwide. Big friends since they were 10 years old, they got soon involved into electronic music and influenced by a wide range of styles as house, techno, trip-hop, electronica, chill out and classic music they developed during the last decade a style that couldn’t be defined with other term than “cosmic”, edging between the silky lines that divide deep-house, dub and tech-house with their quintessential romantic touch, always able to create a special intensity in their music. – R.A.

Time Wharp’s second album for Astro Nautico, Feel No Pain, deals in remedial audio, undulating sound tonics for the relief of suffering.

A collection of minimalist synthesizer solo improvisations, Feel No Pain is at home in the neo-New Age zeitgeist. Time Wharp (Patrick Loggins) finds an idiosyncratic voice among this transnational and intergenerational thread of experimentalist sound healers. Their tender soundworld attunes listeners to the fullest extent of their capacity for peace of mind and spiritual restoration through a humble economy of heartfelt melodic elements.

Wharp’s process of creation on Feel No Pain was acutely individual. Each solo improvisation was recorded in solitude between 2013 and 2015, as guideposts for times and mindsets both dark and light. The synth exercises announce themselves like talismans, warding off the bad vibes of anxiety and self-decay. ‘Birds of North America’ matches cascading synth arpeggios with walls of tonal reverb, forming a protective architecture around this moment, this mind, this body. ‘XKEYSCORE’ and ‘3-Audio’ set mind-body-moment in motion, the former’s interlocking arpeggiator strata driving a whimsical dance; while the latter simulates the galloping rhythms of digital horses using feedback delay loops. The stuck-ness of cycles gives way to movement: from despair to hope.

After years of personal practice, the retroactive collection of these cassette recordings delineates the full body of work presented here, coupling the openness to let feelings & sound wash over you with full belief in the power of music as sanctuary.

‘Feel No Pain’ is available now on cassette and all digital platforms:

GoldFish- South Africa

Their genre-defying mix of live instruments, House beats and searing live performances has seen South Africas Goldfish go from impromptu jams at a tiny beach club in Cape Town to headlining Amsterdam’s Olympic Stadium, cracking a top 10 on the US iTunes Dance chart, a residency at Pacha Ibiza with David Guetta and DJ’s like Fedde le Grand knocking at their door to do remix their tracks. It’s almost hard to believe that not very long ago they were just Dom and Dave, two music students who lived a relatively chilled life of surfing and playing music in their home town Cape Town.

The 2nd release on Dischi Autunno is the 1st album of The Magic Ray, new project of established artist Fred Bigo aka Electronicat. The album is produced by Cosmo Vitelli.
Fred Bigo: “Work on The Magic Ray began in 2015 when, after playing him recordings of a set of spontaneous compositions, Cosmo Vitelli offered to produce the album in his new studio in Marzahn, located in the somewhat desolate far east of Berlin, Germany. We worked on new arrangements of selected songs, and re-recorded guitars, bass, and electronics. Live drums were laid down by skilled percussionist Chris Imler. Vocals and lyrics were provided by the Scottish singer Catriona Shaw, as well as by the legendary Kid Congo Powers – Soundcloud

Kikagaku Moyo

“To anyone who has heard the music of Kikagaku Moyo, it should come as no surprise that the band’s origins lie in hours upon hours of late-night jamming, illuminated by nothing more than the geometric patterns playing behind the band’s eyelids, resulting in a natural, free-floating sound, as of-the-earth as it is intergalactic. It may be surprising that the band sharpened their improvisational skills by busking on the streets of their native Tokyo. It may be surprising that the band’s overall sound may owe as much or more to the Incredible String Band as it does to Acid Mother’s Temple. Boundless though they may be, Kikagaku Moyo are anything but lost, their child-like wonder manifested in a confident, courageous exploration of sound. Labels – psychedelic, folk, prog-rock, psychedelic-folk-mixed-with-prog-rock – do little to accurately reflect the spectrum of influences on display, let alone the more impactful realization of completeness in Kikagaku Moyo’s songs. Easily one of the most shimmering crown-jewels in the rapidly expanding BBiB catalog, look for Kikagaku Moyo and Forest of Lost Children to be found taking shape in the expanded minds of listeners everywhere.” – Ryan Muldoon

Maryland’s Michael Nau is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who crafts psychedelic- and folk-influenced indie pop. With bandmates Whitney McGraw (keyboards), Jasen Reeder (bass), and Clinton Jones (drums), he released three albums as lead singer/guitarist of indie rock’s Page France before forming the style-blending psych-folk project Cotton Jones Basket Ride with McGraw in 2007. The moniker issued three EPs and an LP before the clipped Cotton Jones name put out two more full-lengths (2009’s Paranoid Cocoon and 2010’s Tall Hours in the Glowstream) and an EP (2011’s Sit Beside Your Vegetables) via Suicide Squeeze. The same label released Nau’s first album under his own name, Mowing, in early 2016. Built from a selection of several years’ worth of written material that was never fully realized, it featured McGraw — by then Nau’s wife — among its many guests. Full Time Hobby gave it a European release later in the year, and his second solo effort, Some Twist, followed in June 2017, also on Full Time Hobby and Suicide Squeeze. ~ Marcy Donelson, Apple Music

Following up from 2014’s debut-EP Begone, Amphior is now back with a similar touch on his new EP entitled Unlocked. The allusive and melancholic music still consists of the same noisy, distorted and distant sounds that melts together with 2-steppy shuffle-rhytms and eerie pitched vocal-samples, however Unlocked EP is generally darker and more into-the-core than the debut. – Soundcloud

Jonathan Wilson (b 1974) is an American musician and record producer. He runs Fivestar Studios, in Echo Park, Los Angeles, which he relocated from its original location in Laurel Canyon in 2009. The space is renowned for its sound quality and analog recording equipment. Though less folky overall, his sound is reminiscent of CSNY and other folk rock  groups of the 70’s, so it’s no surprise that 2013’s Fanfare features David Crosby and Graham Nash.

A pivotal figure in the history of Malian music, Sorry Bamba was a popular and influential musician whose work bridged the gap between Mali’s cultural traditions and the new freedoms of the post-Colonial era. Bamba was born in 1938 in Mopti, a city crossed by the Niger and Bani rivers and known for its cultural diversity. Bamba’s father was a distinguished veteran of Emperor Samory Touré’s military and a nobleman in Malian society; however, this meant young Sorry was forbidden to make music, as under the nation’s caste system, music was an art form reserved for the Griots. However, the death of Sorry’s parents was he was ten threw his life into chaos, and he found solace in music, initially teaching himself to play a simple six-holed flute. In his teens, he developed a taste for a rich variety of music — traditional Malian music, highlife from Ghana, local accordion master Toumani Touré, Corsican vocalist Tino Rossi, and Luis Mariano, a singer from Spain’s Basque country — who would influence his later work. In 1957, Bamba formed his first band, Group Goumbé, named for a dance style then popular along the Ivory Coast; the band featured Bamba on trumpet, an instrument he was still teaching himself to play, and a handful of percussionists. Group Goumbé developed a loyal youth following through aggressive self-promotion, and after Mali gained its independence from France, Bamba and his group benefited from a new openness toward local music on the state-run radio network Radio Mali. Group Goumbé evolved into a more sophisticated ensemble, Bani Jazz, whose ambitious music was married to lyrics influenced by folk tales of the Dogon people. As Mali established nation-wide Youth Week competitions to give music and dance troupes an opportunity to show their talents, Bani Jazz and Bamba’s later ensemble, the Kanaga Orchestra, won three biennial trophies as Mali’s best band (in 1976, 1978, and 1980), and their fusion of Latin jazz, Western R&B and funk, and traditional Malian styles made them a favorite across the nation. Bamba was also the director of a dance troupe in Mopti as well as a second group strictly devoted to traditional music. As Mail’s national support of music fell to the wayside, Bamba relocated to Paris in the ’90s, where he continues to write and record music. In 2011, the American independent label Thrill Jockey Records released Sorry Bamba, Vol. 1: 1970-1979, a collection of classic recordings from Bamba’s back catalog compiled with the participation of the artist himself.- Discogs

Emmanuel Jal

Emmanuel Jal's Destiny - 14th Annual Francophonie en fete

South Sudanese-Canadian musician, actor, and political activist Emmanuel Jal was only eight years old when he was kidnapped. Trained through the abuse of his rebel captors, by the age of ten he was a killer. He was a Sudanese child soldier, one of tens of thousands of kids taken from their families. Emmanuel Jals first music video, released in 2005, was for Gua. The symbolism of unity is expressed in the title of the song, meaning both “good” in Nuer and “power” in Sudanese Arabic. The lyrics illustrate the desires of the Sudanese people to return to a peaceful, independent homeland. Gua topped the music charts in Kenya and was played by BBC across Africa. It was Jal’s breakthrough to the international market.

Buika is a critically acclaimed jazz-influenced flamenco fusion singer from Spain who broke through to mainstream success in 2006 with her second solo album, Mi Niña Lola. Born Concha Buika in 1972 in Palma, a city on the Balearic Island of Majorca, Spain, she is the daughter of a political exile from the former Spanish colony Equatorial Guinea, a small country in Africa. Influenced by her mother’s love of jazz, she began her singing career in the clubs of Majorca and the neighboring Balearic Island of Ibiza. She also performed in Las Vegas for a while.
Buika’s commercial recording career began in 2000 with Mestizüo, a little-heard album of vocal jazz standards co-billed to Majorcan pianist Jacob Sureda. Meanwhile, she began appearing as a featured vocalist on various electronic dance music tracks, most notably Smurf & Perry’s “Lovin’ You” (2001), a club favorite compiled on numerous house music CDs. Ultimately offered a major-label solo recording contract with Dro Atlantic, Buika made her eponymous album debut in 2005. She collaborated with Latin Grammy Award-winning flamenco producer Javier Limón on her follow-up effort, Mi Niña Lola (2006), a breakout album whose stylistic fusion was both critically acclaimed and commercially successful. The album reached number 11 on the Spanish albums chart and sold well in neighboring France, too.
Buika collaborated with Limón once again on her next album, Niña de Fuego (2008), a similarly successful album that was nominated for Album of the Year at the Latin Grammy Awards. She broke into the Top Ten of the Spanish albums chart with her next full-length effort, El Último Trago (2009), a collaboration with Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés. Recorded in Cuba with Valdés and a live band, the album is an homage to Mexican singer Chavela Vargas. It won a Latin Grammy in 2010 for Best Traditional Tropical Album.
Buika relocated to Miami, Florida in the United States in 2011, the same year her double-disc retrospective En Mi Piel: The Best of Buika was released in the U.S. Following international touring and time off, she re-entered the studio in 2012. She recorded in Madrid, Miami, and New York with her longtime trio (pianist Ivan “Melon” Lewis and percussionist Ramon Porrina) and a large cast of collaborators, including guitarist Pat Metheny. These varied sessions resulted in her most diverse recording, La Noche Más Larga (The Longest Night), which was released in early June of 2013. ~ Jason Birchmeier, Rovi

“Fills EP is an album of jazzy, glitchy downtempo meant to channel the peculiar and beautiful experience of life through the medium of electronic music. With Fills EP, I further and more deeply explore the idea of the artist as alchemist. From the first foley sample to the final glimmering glaze of glitchiness, layer upon layer of audio, midi, and all manner of percussive potpourri are brought forth from the vast and mysterious higher realm known as my sound library and meticulously manipulated like sound-paint until a brand new piece emerges which can be thought of as the embodiment of novelty, art that surprises even its creator. I have thoroughly enjoyed the process of helping these tracks create themselves, and I hope you enjoy them!” – Sam Andrus (5AM)
