“South Londoner Greentea Peng vibrates a little differently from the rest of us, literally – her debut album was purposely recorded at 432Hz (and not the industry standard 440) because of the frequency’s much-discussed soothing properties. Within the album lies a hazy miasma of jazz, righteous reggae, easy-going hip-hop and vintage neo-soul in which the echo effects of dub and the swirl of psychedelia hand off to skitters of drum’n’bass. “Krishna and Jah” keep watch over the recording studio.” – The Guardian

New Kingdom was an American rap rock group from New York City consisting of Jason ‘Nosaj’ Furlow, Sebastian Laws, and Scotty Hard. Formed in 1987, New Kingdom was known for its psychedelic, funk, and blues-influenced style and abstract lyricism. The duo released two albums on Gee Street Records in 1993 and 1996.  Beastie Boys and Rage Against the Machine were putting out albums around the same time so its hard to say who’s was influencing who, but there are clearly some similarities between them.

1993 debut, Heavy Load

The music of Aruba-born Amsterdam-based artist Pieter Monzón, aka Pete Philly is a blend of hip hop, soul and jazz. Quite a story behind the man who was fronting for the likes of Kanye West and James Brown then disappeared. It was Lyme disease that forced him to drop out of his flourishing music career – an illness that took 20 years to diagnose. Before that Philly wasn’t sure what the problem was: often Lyme disease can be misdiagnosed as a number of other illnesses, from gluten intolerance to allergies to paranoid schizophrenia. Pete Philly is back, and the MC who used to be one half of Pete Philly & Perquisite is now a solo artist,  producer and MC all in one.

As a multi-instrumentalist, producer, emcee & music educator, THAVIUS BECK is a man whose life revolves around audio and technology. With a focus on bass heavy rhythms, dark emotional melodies and twisted sample manipulation, Thavius has not only released numerous solo albums (under his own name, plus previous moniker Adlib), but he’s also collaborated with and remixed luminaries Saul Williams, Nine Inch Nails, The Mars Volta, Skylar Grey and Nas, to name a few. – Soundcloud

He’s finally stepped to the forefront and took the lead on his on album, bringing those connections together to curate a diverse compilation record, Lifetronics, featuring comrades fromTalib Kweli to Smoke DZA to Melanie Fiona. -Wikipedia

Noname is the latest voice to emerge this year from the loose assemblage of artists gathered around Chance the Rapper, and her music shimmers with the evening-streetlight glow that characterizes most of them. Like Chance’s Coloring Book, or Jamila WoodsHEAVN, or even Joey Purp’s rough but sternly humaneiiiDrops, Noname’s music feels luminously positive, clear-eyed, and compassionate. “Diddy Bop” is luxurious and easy and warm, a reminiscence about good times, or better ones. Her voice is in a playful and confident middle range between forestalling, singing, and slam poetry, and her lyrics carve out enough details to fill the song with an entire imagined cast of characters—jealous boyfriends griping at girls in love with Raz-B from B2K;  kids nabbing twenties from their mom’s purse.

Tensei returns with another installment of the HotBox Sessions. These instrumentals were originally created in 2009-2010 and used by Chicago mc’s for mixtapes and various projects. The HotBox was our old studio in Chicago in a tiny extra room that had no central air. It used to get very hot and literally we would be sweating while making music in the summer. These songs were created prior to incorporating jazz and soul musicians to our sound. Tribute, the final track is a bonus cut inspired by the late great dilla. The vocal versions to these songs are below

Introducing Intalekt, the south East London based producer & songwriter with the first single from his debut EP IIWII , “It Is What It Is”. ‘Get By’ sees Intalekt’s soulful instrumental blend effortlessly with good friend and fellow artist Jay Prince’s story-telling style of lyrical flow, a refreshing stance on UK underground Hip-Hop. The resulting composure ultimately speaks of urban survival, combining funk-infused summer themes layering over a down to earth narrative which sets a consistent theme for the entire IIWII project
